Potshot

Hunters who killed game without any regard for rules of sportsmanship, who killed simply to fill the cooking pot back home, were reproachfully called potshot hunters in the sixteenth century. Their potshots, fired at young animals out of season, at birds on the ground , and so on, came in time to mean any indiscriminate shot fired at an animal or person who has no chance to escape or defend himself.
