Playing to the grandstand or grandstanding is a baseball term first recorded in 1888 describing a
showoff player who tries to make impossible catches or one who makes easy
catches appear difficult to the fans in the grandstand, Within a few years such
players were called grandstanders, and the term was soon applied to a
showoff in any endeavor.
