Last Licks

 By Robert Laurence

Since at lease 1883, last licks has meant a team’s last three outs in baseball, its last chance to win the game. It has since come to mean anyone’s last try at anything. To put in one’s best licks means to make a winning effort and, although this term dates back to the 1700s and is of unclear origin, the baseball connection has kept it alive.
