A person who puts
on an impressive front but has no substance is called a four-flusher.
The common species takes its name from the game of five card stud poker, in which
the four cards showing can indicate a flush (five cards of the same suit) or, if
the fifth card is of another suit, a useless hand. The expression dates back to
the nineteenth century.
