Double-header

 By Robert Laurence

A railroad train pulled by two locomotives was called a double-header in the 1879s. Though there were baseball double-headers – two games played in succession on the same day – as early as 1882, the term doesn’t seem to have been used in baseball until the end of the century. It could have derived from the railroad usage but there is no absolute proof of this.
