Bronx Cheer

 By Robert Laurence

The Bronx, one of New York City’s five boroughs, takes its name from Jonas Bronck, A Dane who first settled the area for the Dutch West India Company in 1641. Points of interest in the celebrated borough are the Bronx Zoo and Botanic Gardens, The Edgar Allan Poe cottage and Yankee Stadium (“the house that Ruth built”). Long associated with baseball, the razz, or raspberry, called the Bronx cheer, wasn’t born at Yankee Stadium, home of baseball’s New York Yankees, as many baseball fans believe. It may derive from the Spanish word branca, “a rude shout,” and possible originated at the old National Theatre in the Bronx. We only know for certain that the term was first recorded in 1929 and that many players have received Bronx cheers in Yankee Stadium.
