Hulks

 By Erik Tierney

The Hulks were old dismasted vessels anchored and used as prison ships in the 18th and 19th centuries. Charles Dickens mentions them in Chapter 2 of Great Expectations (1860-61): "People are put in the Hulks because they murder, and because they rob, and forge, and do all sorts of bad . . ." The British used such ships to hold American prisoners during the Revolutionary War.
