Twinberry

By Robert Laurence

Twinberry (Mitchella repens), Also called the partridge berry, squeakberry, and teaberry, this trailing evergreen native to eastern North American makes excellent dense ground cover for shady places in the garden if it is provided with a rich woods soil. Named from Virginia Botanist Dr. John Mitchell, the plant, with its spicy berries that are good for eating out of hand. The berries, each one produced form unique twinflowers untied at their base, are only about ¼ inch in diameter and are actually drupes with 8 nutlets. Twinberry is a good plant for a terrarium. It roots easily at the joints and can be propagated by layering or by division of its roots.
