Twinberry (Mitchella repens), Also called the partridge berry,
squeakberry, and teaberry, this trailing evergreen native to eastern North
American makes excellent dense ground cover for shady places in the garden
if it is provided with a rich woods soil. Named from Virginia Botanist Dr.
John Mitchell, the plant, with its spicy berries that are good for eating
out of hand. The berries, each one produced form unique twinflowers untied
at their base, are only about ¼ inch in diameter and are actually drupes
with 8 nutlets. Twinberry is a good plant for a terrarium. It roots easily
at the joints and can be propagated by layering or by division of its
roots.
