Strawberry - Raspberry (Rubus illecebrosus). Also called the
balloon berry, because it rather bit- up to one inch long- the
strawberry-raspberry is no good to eat out of hand, tasting sour or
insipid, but has the flavor of mixed raspberries and strawberries when
cooked and made into jams, syrups, and pies. Native to China, the plant is
hardy here from zone 3 southward. An arching, very prickly plant about one
foot high, it is cultivated like raspberries, but is very easy to grow,
prolific of red berries, and has no special soil requirements. It makes a
good ornamental ground cover for a bank and is best propagated by the
division of roots in the fall.
