Rossberry. A creation of Luther Burbank that tastes like a
combination of the blackberry, loganberry, and raspberry is a good bet for
the Southwest, where both cold and drought are problems. A prolific plant
(yielding up to 600 gallons an acre) that fruits a year after planting, it
bears big berries that are the first to ripen in the Southwest. The plants
can easily be trained on a trellis or other supports and have the same
cultural requirements as loganberries (see Index), being relatively free
of insect pests and diseases. This berry has very few seeds and is
excellent for eating out of hand as well as for pies, preserves, and quick
freezing. It is available form Wolfe Nursery, Highway 377 West,
Stephenville, Texas 76401.
