Some modern tomato varieties are so prolific that they are virtual tomato
factories. A number of tomato plants actually grow more than twenty feet high
when trained against a building, and several gardeners claim to have harvested
250 tomatoes from a single rampant vine. There is documentation of a sprawling, unstaked California plant that "covered a space of eight feet square" and
yielded 170 pounds of fruit before frost killed the vine. Many 'super tomatoes"
are capable of such heavy fruiting, with proper watering and fertilization, but
