Although the word butterfingers – used for someone who drops things or can’t hold on to anything, as if his or her fingers were coated with slippery butter – has been traced back to early-seventeenth-century England, its popularity in America stems from its use as a baseball term for a fielder who drops the ball. The baseball usage is first recorded in 1888 and butterfingers was being generally and widely used shortly thereafter.
